After a three-year renovation, the Skyhall at Brussels Airport has reopened its doors. Henceforth, the former transit hall, with its stunning glass façade, will host exceptional and high-end events!
Past and present
Inaugurated in 1958, to receive the many visitors of the first post-war World Exhibition, the airport was nothing short of ground-breaking. One of its outstanding features was the 1,800-metre high, glass-fronted transit hall with its seemingly floating arched roof.
Brussels Airport decided to breathe new life into this landmark with a renovation that did justice to the original design. A major challenge. The problem was that the massive use of aluminium, which had made it possible to create a particularly light structure, had come to be its weak point. The aluminium structure was unable to bear the weight of the fire protection systems and double glazing inherent to contemporary buildings. That's when our engineers came up with a brilliant idea: to reinforce the roof from above with a new steel support structure so that the existing structure would only have to bear its own weight. That's how it all started ...
Once the technical feasibility had been confirmed, there was nothing to stop the transit hall from being restored to its former glory while fitting it with the latest technology.
High-end events
If you enter the Skyhall today, you will experience the same overwhelming sense of airiness and space as did the first passengers back in 1958. Even today, its enormous glass façade offers an unrivalled view of the intricate choreography of the planes.
“We are confident that this exceptional hall will soon become the venue for numerous high-end national and international events”, says Arnaud Feist.
The Skyhall was inaugurated officially on Wednesday, the 29th of January. As from March, the Skyhall will be available to host events of every description.
