Tropical temperatures on the tarmac: protect yourself from the sun and heat
"The summer will be very hot this year, with heat records expected in the northern hemisphere," says the World Meteorological Organization. Here are a few tips to keep a cool head.
At work, at home or on vacation, it doesn't matter - these tips apply to everyone!
In all circumstances
- Maintain a good hydration level
Drinking enough water is always important, but on hot days the body dehydrates more quickly. So, drink before you get thirsty and preferably one and a half litres of fresh water a day (for example, one glass every 20 minutes). A specifically rehydrating drink (one glass, two to three times a day) or drinking yoghurts and juices are also good options because they replenish the minerals you lose when it is hot. Avoid alcohol and drinks containing a lot of caffeine (coffee/tea) or sugar.
- Eat light
Heavy meals increase body temperature. On hot days, avoid fatty foods and heavy meals. Instead, eat easily digestible meals such as salads, raw vegetables and fruit.
- Cover your head
Also protect your head from sunstroke or sunburn by wearing a hat, bandana or cap. If you feel hot, it is best to wet your head and forehead.
- Use sunscreen and protect your eyes
Prolonged exposure to the sun is synonymous with the risk of sunburn. Wear sunscreen (with a high sun protection factor) before going out in the sun and repeat every two hours. Your eyes need to be protected from the sun's rays by wearing a cap or UV-filtering sunglasses.
- Are you taking any medication? Consult your doctor
If you are taking any medications, contact your pharmacist or doctor to change your treatment if necessary.
At work
- Monitor your physical condition and that of your colleagues.
- Gradually acclimate to the heat.
- Do not overexert yourself. If you are tired, slow down or work at a regular pace.
- Take frequent breaks in cooler or shaded areas.
- Beware of loose clothing: this may be dangerous near moving machinery and vehicles. Remember to follow safety precautions.
Need to be refreshed on the tarmac?
- As soon as temperatures exceed 27°C, misters are active to the east of the Connector.
- Teams that work a lot outdoors receive additional guidance and advice from their managers.
We wish you an excellent summer!
