Always wanted to know what happens to our passengers’ hold luggage after check-in? Following the introduction of the new state-of-the-art ‘pick and place’ baggage system in 2017, Brussels Airport has created a video that gives you a glimpse behind the scenes.
The video offers exclusive images of the 17 km of baggage belts under the airport and shows the technology of the ‘pick and place’ baggage system at work: ten robots stack pieces of baggage belonging to passengers whose flights don’t leave until a few hours later in a warehouse and automatically retrieve them at the right time, after which they are brought to the correct destination. Until February 2017, part of the baggage had to be sorted by hand due to a lack of storage space during the daily peak times. With the implementation of the ‘pick and place’ system, this manual processing was fully automated. Through use of this technology, more and better possibilities can be provided within the baggage-handling process, which allows for a more efficient delivery of the baggage and an improved passenger experience.
The new storage space that was created for the system can hold up to 1,200 cases. At peak times, more than 900 items have so far been stored in the space of one hour.
The capacity of the baggage process at the airport has therefore been significantly increased and prepares Brussels Airport for the future. Want to find out more about our strategic vision, 2040? Go to www.brusselsairport2040.be.
