This summer, Brussels Airport together with Brussels Airlines introduced a new system to allow passengers to check in their hold baggage themselves.
Since the start of the summer, short and medium-haul passengers with Brussels Airlines and the other airlines of the Lufthansa group can use a new system to self-check in their hold baggage. To this end, a new zone has been installed near check-in row 4, featuring 16 label kiosks and 6 bag drops where the bags are weighed and placed on the belt towards the baggage hall.
Compared to the previous system, the process runs much smoother as printig the labels and putting the bags on the belt is done in two separate places. Thanks to the new Baggage drop-off up to 400 passengers an hour can self-check in their bags, as long as they checked in online and have their boarding pass ready.
The new system was deployed in stages during the summer holidays and is now fully operational. Between the 4th of July and the 31st of August, no less than 35,000 suitcases, or almost 10% of the suitcases of the short and medium haul flights of the Lufthansa Group, were checked in using the Baggage drop-off. But now that the system is fully operational, the share of self-checked in baggage is likely to inrease.
This is an extensive pilot, in collaboration with home carrier Brussels Airlines, that is the major airline at Brussels Airport. During the pilot stage, the system will be closely monitored and improved where necessary, with a view to expansion possibilities in the future.
To be continued.
