At Brussels Airport, we are working hard to get more people out of cars and onto public transport and cycling. We call this a modal shift. Goal: a modal split of 60/40 by 2027.
In 2022, 70% of employees and passengers arrived at Brussels Airport by (shared) car or taxi. Our ambition is to bring that figure to 60% by 2027. To this end, we have drawn up the Sustainable Airport Mobility Plan (SAMP), a comprehensive multi-year plan that aims at optimal, sustainable and multimodal accessibility for employees, visitors, passengers and businesses.
Brussels Airport as multimodal hub
Did you know that over 900 buses a day already stop at the airport today? These include scheduled buses of De Lijn, STIB/MIVB's 'Airport Line', as well as international and intercity connections. This makes Brussels Airport one of the largest bus stations in the country.
Since mid-2020, the Ringtrambus (line 820) has connected the northern periphery of Brussels with our airport. The Ringtram bus largely runs in its own dedicated bus lane, allowing it to avoid traffic jams. And if all goes according to plan, we should have a real tram connection with Brussels by 2028.
Your airport is also easily accessible by rail form all corners of the country, either with a direct train or with a single transfer. And we also continue to lobby for high-speed connections to our neighbouring countries and additional (direct) domestic train connections, especially in the morning and evening hours.
With the increasing popularity of e-bikes, we are also seeing a growing number of airport employees coming to work by bike. That is why we are working with the Province of Flemish Brabant and the Government of Flanders, among others, to improve cycling infrastructure to and around the airport. For example, a branch off the F3 Brussels-Leuven cycle highway was built to the terminal area and you can now easily bike to Brucargo from Vilvoorde thanks to the bicycle bridge over the Haachtsesteenweg.
Try an alternative
As you can see, there are many ways to commute to the airport. Mobility Week might be the perfect opportunity to try an alternative!
The journey planners of the NMBS, De Lijn, the MIVB and Fietssnelwegen.be will help get you started.
Check the Mobility section on this website for more detailed information on how to commute to the airport.
