April sees the start of the first phase of works on Apron 3 North, the area between the Satellite building and Pier B. The renovation works will take place between April 2018 and the end of September 2019.
Extensive renovations with a view to the future
The existing surfacing of Apron 3 North has reached its end of life. This is why the decision was made to carry out extensive renovations. Our airport is thus investing in the future: the renovations are necessary in order to continue guaranteeing the safety of our passengers, and on the other to deal with the expected growth in the number of passengers.
Taxiway INN9 and the southern stands (near the Satellite building) will be renovated first. In total, 125,000 m² of concrete will be broken up and replaced. The first part of the works will run from the start of April to the end of October. This will be followed by a winter break. The second part of the works will take place from the start of March 2019 to the end of September 2019.
An overview of the works:
- 1 April to 31 May 2018: Break up southern stands and TWY INN9
- 1 June to 30 June 2018: Break up southern stands, reconstruction of TWY INN9, break up and reconstruction of intersection INN/OUT 9/10.
- 1 July to 31 October 2018: Reconstruction of southern stands
- 1 March 2019 to 31 May 2019: Break up and reconstruction of north-western stands
- 1 June to 30 September 2019: Break up and reconstruction of north-eastern stands
Impact for airport staff
Airport staff working in the terminal, Connector or one of the office buildings near Apron 3 North may be affected by the renovation works. Brussels Airport will do everything within its power to minimise the nuisance as much as possible. For example, demolition works such as breaking up the concrete will be carried out at night, in order to reduce noise nuisance to a minimum for as many airport staff as possible. Construction workers will also use water sprays to control dust and reduce dust pollution as much as possible. In a later phase, when laying new concrete, there will be some slight nuisance, mostly in the form of vibrations.
In any case, during this period, the view of our airside operations will be less attractive. However, we hope to be able to inaugurate a new site that’s ready for the future as of October 2019.
